Think about it as if you have a large circle that follows you around you on the map. If you shoot an animal, another of the same species is spawned somewhere in the larger area. As you move through the game, and as you kill, the spawn points try to maintain that population density in that large area. When you enter the game or fast travel, a portion of this population is spawned immediately in that large area (some are delayed about 1 min, but that’s another story). There is a set population in which the number remains constant (this is verified by the devs). To keep processing to a minimum, the game has many spawn points of varying sizes throughout the map that are triggered (or restricted) by your proximity. The game basically tries to maintain a certain population density in a large area around you in which you are hunting and as you go through the game. The game does not simply spawn a whole herd of animals across the map - otherwise you’d be having major performance issues with processors. (And if anyone needs me to clarify how I came to these conclusions, or if they want to question how this “jives” with something they’ve seen, I’ll be glad to go into further detail.) And this is based on normal game play. I’m sure there will be people who disagree, some who have seen things differently, and some who may point out where I’m wrong. I’m not saying “this is how it is”, just that this is what I’ve gathered from over 1,000 hours of game play.
